Abstract

Literature abounds in error analyses of spatial/temporal prepositions, but there are few analyses on prepositions of abstract relations. This is the first study investigating the use of English prepositions among Turkish EFL learners, through the translation of Turkish postpositions of abstract relations. This study aims to analyze the translation of some common Turkish postpositions into English, açı(sı)yla, açı(sın) dan, ilişkin and yönelik, which are considered to create difficulty in translation into English in terms of their structurally different uses, polysemous and abstract nature, for seeking answers to the questions : 1. What is the distribution of correct use, misuse and omission by prepositions? 2. Is there a relation between the uses covering the translation of the analyzed postpositions? The follow-up question is as follows: are the postpositions, following, e.g. nouns/adjectives, more easily translated than those following a clause? and 3. What are the sources and nature of errors? The data were provided by 34 second-year university students through their translations of the attached text with analyzed postpositions highlighted and sentences numbered. The text was purposively rewritten to include the postpositions to be analyzed. The underlying reasons for selecting this text to be used in the exam are to make sure that the students took the decisions as to the translation of postpositional phrases by themselves and to see their choices in the same time frame. The errors committed by the students were analyzed by three different specialists including the author herself. Furthermore, a Pearson chi-square test of independence was performed for the second research question. The analyses were made at the level of prepositional phrase rather than preposition itself. Regarding Question 1, the distribution of possible uses were identified and it was observed that students tended to omit the whole postpositional phrase where they had difficulty. Regarding Question 2, as a result of Pearson's chi-square test, it was found that there is a significant relation between the structure of postpositional phrase and patterns of correct use, misuse and omission and that sense played a more important role than structure. Misuses were often interlingual and caused ungrammatical sentences, whereas omissions were at the prepositional phrase level. Detailed tables on all these correct use, misuse, and omissions are given in this paper. Regarding question 3, the sources and nature of errors were identified and discussed. This study is intended to contribute to Translation Studies, Translator Training and Linguistics. Future studies may be conducted on errors in translation of different Turkish postpositions into English as well as other languages for more comprehensive translational, educational and linguistic conclusions.
