Translating the Bestseller

Özet

Bu çalışmada popüler edebiyatın, özellikle çok satan kitapların çevirisinde sıkça rastlanabilen zorluklar ele alınmıştır. İki farklı çok satan romandan alınan örnekler ve çevirilerinde karşılaşılan zorluklar, Nida'nın belli başlı işlevsel sözcük ve deyim sınıfları çerçevesinde gruplan-dırıtmıştır. Sonuç olarak, popüler edebiyatın çevirisinin kendine özgü özellikleri ve zorlukları olabileceği belirtilmiştir. Bu zorluklar, İngilizce'den Türkçe'ye çevrilen popüler romanların sayısı da göz önüne alınarak,çevirmenin hem okuyucuya hem yayınevine hem de Türkçe'ye karşı sorumlulukları ışığında irdelenmiştir.

Abstract

This paper discusses the difficulties in the translation of popular fiction, specifically bestsellers. The examples from two different bestseller novels and the problems that are frequent in their translations are categorized within the framework of Nida's principal function classes of words and idioms. In conclusion, some suggestions are made and it is pointed out that the translations of popular fiction may have very specific characteristics and difficulties. This is considered in the light of the fact that, in view of the amount of bestsellers translated into Turkish from English, the translators hold multiple responsibilities to the readers and the Turkish language.
