LIGHTHOUSES AS SILENT WITNESSES OF S THE MERSIN LIGHTHOUSE

Abstract

From ancient times to the present day, sea routes have been one of the most used areas of transportation for various purposes. However, sea transportation occurs in a quite troublesome and difficult process although it is rapid, cheap and advantageous. For this reason, sailors are in need of some navigational assists to perform this laborious process in an easier way. One of the most important navigational assistants for sailors is lighthouses which is the main theme of this study. There are little research on lighthouses that help sailors quietly in coastal cruising and there is no study related to the Mersin Lighthouse, which is important for navigation. The most impoertant reason why we focus on this topic is this academic lacuna. The aim of this study is to emphasize the importance of lighthouses in terms of both the maritime industry and the city history and to mention the story of the Mersin Lighthouse, which has managed to survive as a quiet and most unknown witness of the history. Thus, as the lighthouses are one of the most important navigational assistants, what today lighthouses mean in the historical context can be determined, and forcasting will be possible on how one can profit from them in the cultural and social milieu. Even today with the advanced technology lighthouses are still one of the most important navigational assistants. This proves the importance of these structures. From this perspective, as the lighthouses are the candidates for witnessing to the history for a long time, they will be important for the history of the future. For this reason, being the structures to be restored, the lighthouses are with us not only sheding some light to seas but also to the maritime history and city history. These structures which have survived until today may tell a lot historically and they may still tell more in various projects. Accordingly, our study aims to increase awareness on these buildings.

Özet

Antik çağlardan günümüze deniz yolları çeşitli amaçlarla en çok kullanılan ulaşım alanlarından biri olmuştur. Ancak deniz ulaşımı seri, ucuz ve avantajlı olmakla birlikte oldukça zahmetli ve zor bir süreçte gerçekleşmektedir. Bu nedenle denizciler bu zahmetli süreci daha kolay geçirmek için bazı seyir yardımcılarına ihtiyaç duymaktadırlar. Denizcilerin en önemli seyir yardımcılarından biri, bu çalışmanın ana teması olan deniz fenerleridir. Kıyılarda sessizce denizcilerin seyirlerine yardımcı olan fenerler üzerine çok az araştırma yapılmış, denizcilik açısından önemli bir konumda olan Mersin Feneri ile ilgili ise hiç çalışma bulunmamaktadır. Bu konu üzerine eğilmemizin en önemli nedenlerinden biri de bu alandaki boşluktur. Bu çalışmanın amacı hem denizcilik bilimi hem de kent tarihi açısından fenerlerin önemini vurgulamak ve tarihin sessiz ve çok bilinmeyen tanığı olarak ayakta kalmayı başarabilmiş Mersin Deniz Fenerinin geçmişine değinmektir. Böylece denizcilik alanında en önemli seyir yardımcılarından biri olan deniz fenerlerinin günümüzde tarihsel anlamda ne ifade ettiği ve sosyo-kültürel alanda dönüştürülerek daha başka ne şekilde istifade edilebileceğine dair öngörülerde bulunulabilecektir. Teknolojinin büyük bir ilerleme gösterdiği bugün bile deniz fenerlerinin en önemli seyir yardımcılarından biri olma vasfını hala sürdürüyor olması bu yapıların önemlerini kanıtlamaktadır. Bu açıdan bakıldığında deniz fenerleri tarihe uzun yıllar tanıklık etmeye devam etmeye aday olduğundan, gelecek zamanların tarihi için de önem arz edecektir. Bu nedenle fenerler sadece denizleri değil aynı zamanda denizcilik bilimi ve kent tarihi alanını da aydınlatan, korunması gereken yapılar olarak bugün yanı başımızda durmaktadır. Günümüze kadar ayakta kalmayı başarmış bu yapılar tarihi açıdan bizlere çok şey anlatabildiği gibi çeşitli projelerle çok daha fazla şey if edebilirler. Bu nedenle makalemiz aynı zamanda bu yapılar üzerin farkındalığı da artırmaya adaydır.
