Abstract
The purpose of this study is to reveal the proficiency levels of mathematics teachers in teaching mathematics content areas in Turkey and Singapore contexts and whether students' academic success in these content areas changes depending on the level of teacher preparation and the country variable. The sample of the current study is all eighth grade students and mathematics teachers participating in the TIMMS 2015 from Turkey and Singapore. The data of the study come from the results of the TIMSS 2015 mathematics achievement test and teacher questionnaire. According to the level of teacher preparation in Turkey, on average 86.33% of the teachers are at well prepared level, 7.83% of the teachers are at somewhat prepared level. For teachers in Singapore, these percentages are 88.35% at well prepared level and 11.15% at somewhat prepared level. The results show that teachers in Singapore are more prepared for the topics in mathematics. The mathematics achievement of the students in Singapore in all four content areas and in all 20 subjects is higher than the mathematics achievements of the students in Turkey. In six out of these 20 subjects, Singapore’s teachers’ preparation for mathematical topics levels is higher than the teachers in Turkey. It is revealed that as the subject preparation for these six content areas increases, student achievement also increases. Mathematics content areas in TIMMS and TEOG overlap. According to this study, which has found out that the level of teacher preparation correlates with students' mathematics achievement, it can be concluded that the teacher preparation can also be correlated to the students' TEOG achievement. As a conclusion, it is thought that the increase in the teacher preparation for the mathematical topics may also increase the mathematics achievement of students in TEOG.
