Abstract

This study on the environmental dimensions of the ongoing civil war in Syria comprises three parts. The concept of environmental security is discussed in the first part, and the security risks implied by the environmental security are discussed in the second part. In the last part, the civil war experienced in Syria is analyzed in the context of environmental security. The civil war in Syria is an environmental disaster. While the civil war in Syria has political causes, factors with roots in the environment were also effective on the start of war and on the increasing anger against the government. The increasing young population of Syria, scarce natural sources, long-lasting drought and the weak economy based on agriculture, have all played important role in the development of conflicts. Refugees with a number reaching 5 million are another environmental problem.
