Abstract
Open channel flow is defined as fluid flow with a free surface open to the atmosphere. The water surface profile is a measure of how the flow depth changes longitudinally. In other words, the graph of the flow depth along the path, gives a stream surface profile. 12 different types of water surface profiles are formed in open channel flow. The purpose of this study is to observe 12 different types of water surface profiles and to investigate the effect of flowrate and obstruction size on water surface profiles and hydraulic jump lenghts. An experimental study was performed by sending three different flowrates to an open channel. Experiment data were obtained by using different obstruction heights, contraction distances and channel slopes. Experiments were performed in a rectangular open channel which is 5 meters long, 0.18 meters wide and 0.2 meters deep. In order to prevent the effect of roughness, channel walls were made of light, durable, plastic material. Channel slope was adjustable. Critical slopes were calculated with Manning equation and calculated slopes were used to adjust the channel slopes during the experiments. 66 experiments were done in steady flow conditions. In 51 experiments water surface profiles were observed succesfully. Observations and measurements were examined and results were presented with tables, graphs and pictures. The results show that, flowrate and obstruction heights are directly proportional with the hydraulic jump lenghts. By the help of the above mentioned results, it was concluded that the relationship of hydraulic jump lengths with the flowrate and obstruction height can be converted to a mathematical function by more experiments and data .
