Abstract

The species composition of Thysanoptera species infesting the apricot trees and population fluctuations of prevalent thrips species as well as thrips damage were investigated in the locations, Mut in Mersin and Balcalı in Adana provinces located at the eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey in years, 2007-2008. Adult thrips were collected mostly by sampling the flowers. Low numbers of fruits were also inspected for the presence of the thrips. A total of 7 thrips species belonging to three families of order Thysanoptera: Thripidae (5), Aeolothripdae (1) and Phlaeothripidae (1) were determined. This species namely are Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), Thrips major (Uzel), Thrips meridionalis (Priesner), Thrips tabaci L., Isoneurothrips australis Bagnall (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), Aeolothrips collaris (Priesner) (Thy.: Aeolothripidae) and Haplothrips aculeatus (Fabricious) (Thy.: Phlaeothripidae). F. occidentalis was the more prevailing thrips species accounting for 38.05% of the total thrips individuals. It was followed by the T. meridionalis (34.99%) and T. major (20.47%). Adult thrips showed main population developments in the blossoming periods of trees. Mean numbers of adult thrips dropped to low levels after petal falls or following formations of first young fruits, while numbers of larval thrips increased. However population densities of thrips species were low and varied from 0.01 to 1.0 thrips per flower in both years. Damage levels of the fruits due to attacks of the thrips were 1-2%. With respect to results obtained from present study, thrips species sampled have no economic importance in the apricot orchards grown in the eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey.
