Aim: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, inflammatory disease which affects mostly young population. Living close to the Equator that received steeper angles of sunlight and higher vitamin D levels is related with lower prevalence of MS and slower progression. In this study we aimed to evaluate the course of MS according to their latitude of residence and vitamin D levels in our territory. Methods: A total of 48 MS patients had been included. Birthplace of the patients and the territories where patients grew up had been questioned, and the patients were separated into two groups after determining the latitude of these areas, separated into three groups according to their vitamin D levels (very low level, low level, normal level). The patient’s age at first attack, the frequency of attacks, clinical system involvement, and involved areas in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have been documented. Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) was used for the evaluation of disability. These variables were compared between latitude and vitamin D level groups. Results: The mean vitamin D level was 20.57±22.01(3-125) ng/ml. Our results suggested that when age at first attack, the frequency of attacks, number of involved clinical systems, MRI involvement classification and EDSS scores were compared between groups according to vitamin D levels and the latitude of residence there were no statistically differences between groups (p>0,05). Conclusion: It was determined in our study that vitamin D levels do not have an effect on disease EDSS scores, the frequency of attacks, MRI involvement and number of involved clinical systems.
