A Pioneering Work in the Tourism History of Turkey: Tourism Guide 1934-1935

Abstract

The efforts of the Touring and Automobile Club of Turkey, which collaborated with the government bodies in the tourism activities that started to accelerate by the early years of the Republic of Turkey, played an important role. Thus, the activities to attract foreign tourists to Turkey gained importance in the above mentioned period and some remarkable studies were also made in order to facilitate the touristic activities. These efforts included the promotional and informative publications in order to improve the tourism infrastructure in Turkey. In this manner, being the first reference in its quality and content within the scope of the published works in tourism and publicity activities, the work called Tourism Guide 1934-1935 was published in 1935 to show the remarkable characteristics of the period. In the scope of this study, containing the important information on the tourism infrastructure and activities in Turkey and in general during the early years of the Republic, this Tourism Guide has been examined as to its content, which shows the characteristics of a pioneering reference work for the tourists. Accordingly, it aims to draw attention to this work as a reference in terms of research on the history of tourism in Turkey, and to create an inclusive awareness for the science world and the public of the subject in question

Özet

Türkiye'de Cumhuriyet'in ilk yıllarından itibaren ivme kazanmaya başlayan turizm faaliyetlerinde devlet organları ile işbirliği hâlinde olan Türkiye Turing ve Otomobil Kulübü'nün çalışmaları önemli bir rol oynamıştır. Bu şekilde söz konusu dönemde Türkiye'de turizm altyapısını geliştirmek ve turistlerin seyahat ve konaklama faaliyetlerini kolaylaştırmak üzere yapılan çalışmalar içinde tanıtıcı ve bilgilendirici yayınlar da yer almıştır. Turizm ve tanıtma faaliyetleri kapsamında yapılan bu yayın çalışmaları arasında 1935'te yayımlanan Turizm Kılavuzu 1934-1935 adlı eser, turizmin çağdaş bir yaklaşımla ele alınmaya başladığı Türkiye'de niteliği ve içeriği münasebetiyle ilk olma hususiyeti ile dikkate değer özellikler göstermektedir. Bu çalışma kapsamında, Cumhuriyet'in ilk yıllarında Türkiye'deki ve dünyadaki turizm altyapısı ve faaliyetleri hakkında önemli bilgiler içermek suretiyle turistlere yol ve yön gösterici bir başvuru eseri özelliği gösteren Turizm Kılavuzu içerik olarak incelenmiştir. Bu doğrultuda çalışma, Türkiye turizm tarihi araştırmaları açısından kaynak değerinde olan bu esere dikkat çekmeyi ve bilim dünyası ile kamuoyunda konuya ilişkin farkındalık yaratmayı amaçlamıştır
