Abstract
Dictionaries are concrete sources presenting the vocabulary of a language. The importance of dictionaries can be understood better if we remember that even a single word can tell a lot about the language it is found in. This article presents an overview and evaluation of dictionary studies in Kazakhstan. For this purpose, the article focuses on two main issues. The first part of the article deals with Turkish dictionaries created in the Middle Ages and the studies Kazakh linguists have conducted on these dictionaries. The second part of the article is devoted to the methodology of compiling bilingual dictionaries (Russian-Kazakh, Kazakh-Russian), which were produced as a result of the arrival of Russians in Central Asia.
