A semiology analysis: Hz. Ali's illustration of testimony

Abstract

Communication is the process that an individual establish a connection with the external world. Meaning is conveyed through the symbols that include both oral and written cultural features with the message inside it. The best way to understand the people and cultures around us is to understand the symbols that belong to the others. Thanks to that, we can create the values and meaning that we desire. Indicator is the smallest unit of meaning and semiology is the scientific branch that analyzes the indicator. There are lots of indicators that produce meaning within the communication of people with each other. Photographs, pictures, graphics, sounds, flowers, costumes, gestures and mimics, colors are some of the indicators. Illustrations are the pictures that have meaning. The information about Hz. Ali, Hz. Hasan, Hz. Hüseyin, Twelve Imams, Hacı Bektaş Velî, Pir Sultan Abdal in Alevî-Bektashî tradition has been transferred from a generation to the other thanks to illustrations. Therefore, illustrations are the ways to express the cultural identity and internalize the message that are being transferred.

Özet

İletişim bireyin dış dünya ile ilgili anlamı kurması sürecidir. Anlam, içinde barındırdığı mesajı ile birlikte sözlü veya sözsüz kültürel özellikler taşıyan sembollerle iletilir. Kendi dışımızdaki bireyleri, kültürleri anlamanın en iyi yolu, onlara ait sembolleri anlamaktır. Bu sayede arzu ettiğimiz anlam ve değerleri karşımızdakinde yaratabiliriz. Anlam dizgelerinin en küçük birimine gösterge, göstergeyi analiz eden bilim dalına ise göstergebilim denir. İnsanların birbirleriyle olan ilişkilerinde pekçok anlam üreten göstergeler vardır. Fotoğraf, resim, grafik, sesler, çiçekler, giysiler, jest ve mimikler, renkler gibi illüstrasyonlar da (temsilî tablo), anlam taşıyan göstergeler olabilir. İllüstrasyonlar hikâye anlatan resimlerdir. Alevî-Bektaşî geleneğinde Hz. Ali, Hz. Hasan, Hz. Hüseyin, On iki İmam, Hacı Bektaş Velî, Pir Sultan Abdal gibi kutsal sayılan değerler ve bu değerlere ait bilgiler illüstrasyonlarla nesilden nesile aktarılmaktadır. Böylece illüstrasyonlar hem kültürel kimliğin ifade edilmesi hem de aktarılmaya çalışılan mesajın içselleştirilmesinde birer araçtırlar.
