The Armor of the Mounted Nomadic Tribes in Eurasia in the 1st Millenium BC
Abstract
Both archaeological data and written sources confirm the existence of the mounted nomadic tribes mainly Scythians and the Sauromat-Sarmatian tribes in a wide geographical area from the Great Wall of China to the Carpathian Mountains in the 1st Millenium BC. The tribes in question, which adopted the nomadic lifestyle, the importance of horses in this type of lifestyle is the reason they are called “Mounted Nomadic Tribes”. Especially, the weapons of the nomadic tribes in the Russia territory, the North Caucauses, and the North Black sea area, till this day is been made a subject of study by researchers. Despite that, the study made on the weapons of the nomadic tribes that existed in Eurasia is extremely limited. In this article, the emergence of the metal armor used as a defense weapon by the mounted nomadic tribes and its spread in Eurasia will try to be specified. However, the types and the manufacturing techniques of the metal armors will also be focused on.

M.Ö. 1. Binde doğuda Çin Seddi’nden batıda Karpat Dağları’na kadar yayılan geniş bir coğrafyada, atlı göçebe kavimleri olarak bilinen İskit ve Sauromat – Sarmat kavimlerinin yaşamış olduklarını hem arkeolojik veriler hem de yazılı kaynaklar doğrulamaktadır. Göçebe hayat tarzını benimsemiş olan söz konusu kavimler, atın bu hayat tarzındaki öneminden dolayı tarihte “Atlı Göçebe Kavimler” olarak tanınmışlardır. Özellikle Rusya toprakları, Kuzey Kafkasya ile Kuzey Karadeniz coğrafyalarındaki göçebe kavimlerin silâhları günümüze kadar birçok araştırmacı tarafından çalışma konusu edinilmiştir. Buna karşın Avrasya’da hayatını sürdürmüş olan Sauromat – Sarmat kavimlerin silâhları üzerine yapılan çalışmalar son derece sınırlıdır. Bu makalede savunma silâhı olarak kullanılan metal zırhların ortaya çıkışı, atlı göçebe kavimler tarafından kullanılması ve Avrasya’ya yayılması belirtilmeye çalışılacaktır. Ayrıca metal zırhların çeşitleri ve imalât teknikleri üzerinde de durulacaktır.
