The Rich and The Poor in “Two Cultures”

Abstract
C.P.Snow made a speech called “Two Cultures” in Rede Lectures series in 1959. In this conference, he made a distinction between sciences –he implied natural sciences- and literary intellectuals and called this split as “Two Cultures”; this concept referred to a distinction between humanities/social sciences and natural sciences opened to wide discussions in scientific circles. C.P.Snow dealt with the problem of similarity/distinction in methodology and subjects of humanities/social sciences and natural sciences both in method and subjects in a wide perspective. The IVth chapter of “Two Cultures” is entitled “the rich and the poor”. In this paper the C.P.Snow’s conception and proposals about the division between the rich and the poor in the end of 1950s, and the postulate about the reasons and the ways to overcome the problem is discussed in a critical point of view. It is also intended to observe the way in which the subject of richness and poverty is dealt with, under which conceptual framework and solutions from 19th century then on.

C.P.Snow 1959 yılında Rede Konferansları bünyesinde “İki Kültür” başlıklı bir sunuş yaptı. Bu sunuşta edebi entelektüellerle bilim insanları - kastedilen doğa bilimcilerdir- arasındaki ayrımı anlatmak amacıyla “iki kültür” kavramını bilim dünyasında tartışmaya açıldı. C.P.Snow sunuşunda beşeri bilimler/sosyal bilimler ve doğa bilimleri alanlarında çalışan araştırmacıların çalışma biçimi ve konularının ortaklaşması/ayrılması meselesini geniş bir çerçevede ele aldı. “İki Kültür” kitabının IV. bölümü “zenginler ve yoksullar” başlığını taşıyor. Bu çalışmada iki kültür çalışmasında ele alındığı şekliyle 1950’li yılların sonunda dünya üzerinde zenginler ve yoksullar bölünmesine, bunun nedenlerine ve ortadan kaldırma amacıyla yapılması gerekenlere ilişkin C.P.Snow’un değerlendirmeleri eleştirel bir gözle ele alınıyor. Aynı zamanda bu konuya ilişkin 19.yüzyıldan günümüze uzanan bir tarihsel çerçevede zenginlik ve yoksulluk meselesinin nasıl ele alındığı, bu konuya ilişkin ne tür kavramsal çerçeveler ve çözüm yolları üretildiği inceleniyor.
