From Faith To Myt: Concepts of Progress From Antiquity to the 20th Centur

Abstract

The idea of progress, is one of the basic concepts of modern western thinking. The aim of this article is examine historical devolepment of the concept of progress in western thought. The concept of progress, that expresses getting better constantly toward the future, was firs born with christianity. With modern ages that one developed by science and technology, this concept has been formulated again with secular terms. With einghlitement, this concept as brought to cultural worl from nature and it was considered that humanity will improve with all its aspects. The idea of progress reached top in the 19th century in the wew era, that was founded on the edea of progress led by science, cociety theoires were made and progress was used as a means for political legitimacy. In the 20th century, progress mostly expressed economic growth and production. Because of the wars took place in the 20th century, progress of ethics lost its credibility and the notion of progress was criticised severely.

İlerleme kavramı modern Batı düşüncesinin ve tarih felsefelerinin temel kavramlarından biridir. Bu makalenin amacı ilerleme kavramının Batı düşüncesindeki tarihsel gelişimini incelemektir. Geleceğe dönük olarak sürekli bir iyileşmeyi ifade eden ilerleme kavramı ilk olarak Hıristiyanlık ile birlikte ortaya çıkmıştır. Bilim ve teknolojinin geliştiği yeniçağla birlikte kavram seküler terimlerle yeniden formüle edildi. Aydınlanma ile birlikte kavram, doğa dünyasından kültür dünyasına taşındı ve insanlığın bir bütün olarak, tüm yönleri ile giderek ilerleyeceği ve yetkinleşeceği düşünülmüştür. İlerleme fikri 19. yüzyılda zirveye ulaştı. Bilimin öncülük ettiği ilerleme fikrini merkeze alan yeni tarih, toplum kuramları üretildi ve ilerleme politik meşruiyet aracı olarak kullanıldı. 20. yüzyılda ilerleme daha çok ekonomik gelişme ve üretimi ifade etmektedir. Bu yüzyılda yaşanan savaşlar ve yıkımlar sebebiyle ahlaki ilerleme düşüncesi inandırıcılığını kaybetmiş ve ilerleme fikrine birçok eleştiri yöneltilmiştir.
