Abstract
According to the dominant view, the self is defined as the autonomous, separate individual. In Western classical view, autonomous self is characterized by independence and separation - individuation. In recent years, a more relational view of the self has emerged in psychology, human development and family therapy. This review article considers shifts from classical developmental theory toward a more relational view in thinking about the self in the context of family therapy. The self concept is explored from different formulations of autonomy, power and connection / disconnection.
