THE RALAMB COSTUME BOOK: AN IMPORTANT VISUAL SOURCE OF OTTOMAN POETRY

Abstract
The costume albums of the Turkish shop artists, made for foreigners in the seventeenth century upon receiving an order, along with the examples of the art of Ottoman miniatures made by the palace miniaturists, are visual resources in the Ottoman poetry studies by remaining committed to the text. The illustrations in these albums, which are found in France, England, Italy, Sweden, the Netherlands, Greece and Poland, contain scenes from daily life and present visual information about the clothes and finery of persons in the Ottoman social structure. In this paper, the importance on the studies of Ottoman poetry of The Ralamb Costume Book by Claes Brorsson Ralamb, who was sent to Istanbul as the ambassador of the Swedish King Gustav X, will be mentioned. The miniatures in the album bring to the present-day many details about the seventeenth century Ottoman social structuring. Whereas, in Ottoman poetry, the persons within this social structuring and that have been painted in miniature in this album were discussed by using the art of figures of speech. However, in the poetry studies made, since attention was generally drawn to the literary arts, the real elements in the background were not dwelled upon very much. However, many of the miniatures in the album serve as a visual source for the couplets. In this context, the miniatures selected from the album and the sample couplets will be evaluated together in this paper. Metne bağlı kalınarak saray nakkaşları tarafından yapılmış Osmanlı minyatür sanatının örnekleriyle birlikte, 17. yüzyılda yabancılar için Türk çarşı ressamlarının sipariş üzerine yapmış oldukları kıyafet albümleri, Osmanlı şiiri incelemelerine görsel anlamda kaynaklık etmektedir. Fransa, İngiltere, İtalya, İsveç, Hollanda, Yunanistan ve Polonya’da bulunan bu albümlerdeki resimler; günlük yaşamdan sahneleri içermekte ve Osmanlı sosyal yapılanmasından kişilerin giyim kuşamları hakkında görsel anlamda bilgi sunmaktadırlar. Bu makalede İsveç Kralı X. Gustaf’ın elçi olarak İstanbul’a gönderdiği Claes Brorson Ralamb’ın Türk Kıyafetleri Albümü’nün, Osmanlı şiiri incelemeleri ve öğretimindeki önemine değinilmiştir. Albümdeki resimler, Osmanlı sosyal yapılanmasına dair birçok ayrıntıyı günümüze taşımıştır. Osmanlı şiirinde ise bu sosyal yapılanmanın içinde bulunan ve Albüm’de resimleri olan kişiler, benzetme sanatı kullanılarak söz konusu edilmişlerdir. Osmanlı şiiri incelemelerinde, çoğunlukla edebî sanata dikkat çekildiği için arka planda yer alan gerçek öge üzerinde çok durulmamıştır. Oysa Türk Kıyafetleri Albümü’ndeki birçok resim, beyitlere görsel açıdan kaynaklık etmektedir. Bu bağlamda, Albüm’deki resimler ve 15-17. yüzyıl
