Toponymy (Ger. toponymie, Fr. toponymie, Eng. toponymy) is the science that studies the proper nouns that indicate location. In Ancient Greek, it is composed of the word tôpos meaning place, location, situs; a part of the body, and the word onoma meaning a specific name of a person or a thing; fame, reputation and name. Toponymy has emerged with the natural, cultural and sociocultural effects of the named place. The condition of the settlement, the location, geographical structure, the animal species or a situation which was lived through a person who was present there, prevailed, gained the reputation of the community he was connected to, who had a religious identity, a political task, a military title, and which still has its traces, a situation encountered have been the source of toponymy. In the onomathesia, the examples of this tradition continued throughout the history can be seen in Bursa as well as in many cities of Anatolia. Bursa is a city that has become the center of attraction of various civilizations throughout history with its historical heritage, cultural diversity, geographic location, strategic importance, trade routes, natural beauty, fertile plains and healing springs. Bursa is “the preamble of Ottoman history” as Grand Vizier Keçecizade Fuad Pasha’s words. The city of Bursa which has an exceptional location among Anatolian cities and which is summarized with the word green, was before a city consisted of seven neighborhood stucked in the fortress before the Ottoman conquest, it became a city consisting of a hundred and forty seven neighborhoods within a period of two centuries after the conquest. With the implementation of settlement policy, Bursa was opened for settlement of Turkmen. In this context, new neighborhoods, districts, villages and towns were built in the city; various structures such as mosque, fountains, schools, bridges and etc. that can be used in common by the people were built; Turkish names were given to new settlement; the names of the former settlements were also nationalized. Most of these names remain the same and has brought their national identity to the present although some of the names given to these places have changed in time depending on the political, economic or social reasons.
