Universities and Social Science in the pincers of Knowledge and Power: A Foucaultian Approach

Bilgi ve İktidar Kıskacında Üniversiteler ve Sosyal Bilimler: Foucaultcu Bir Yaklaşım

Abstract

As a result of people's relationship with each other, power emerges. Therefore, according to the known historical process, power has always been due to people’s living in society. Power has always needed information to maintain its power. The size of the information needed in the historical process has increased continuously. Michel Foucault states that knowledge is produced as a result of these relations by focusing on power relations. According to Foucault, power produces truth through discourse. It adopts the truth produced through oppression and control to bodies. Foucault states that power is everywhere. Universities, which are the center of the field of knowledge, and the social sciences operating within the universities are directly open to the effects of power. Therefore, it is possible to evaluate universities and social sciences with the power and knowledge approach of Foucault. The aim of this study is to analyze the social sciences and universities with the knowledge and power approaches of Foucault.

Özet

İnsanların birbiriyle ilişkisi sonucu, iktidar ortaya çıkar. Bu nedenle bilinen tarihsel sürece göre insanlar, toplum halinde yaşadığından dolayı iktidar da devamlı olagelmiştir. İktidar, iktidarını sürdürebilmek için her zaman bilgiye ihtiyaç duymuştur. Tarihsel süreç içerisinde de ihtiyaç duyulan bilginin boyutu sürekli artmıştır. Michel Foucault, iktidar ilişkilerine odaklanarak bilginin bu ilişkiler sonucu üretildiğini belirtmektedir. Foucault’a göre iktidar, söylem vasıtasıyla hakikati üretmektedir. Bedenlere ise baskı ve denetim yoluyla üretilen hakikati benimsetir. Foucault, iktidarın her yerde olduğunu belirtir. Bilgi sahasının merkezi olan üniversiteler ve üniversitelerin bünyesinde faaliyet gösteren sosyal bilimler, iktidarın etkilerine doğrudan açıktır. Dolayısıyla üniversiteleri ve sosyal bilimleri Foucault’un iktidar ve bilgi yaklaşımıyla değerlendirmek mümkündür. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Foucault’un bilgi ve iktidar yaklaşımlarıyla üniversiteler ve sosyal bilimlerin bir çözümlemesini yapmaktır.
