THE CONCEPT OF SEB‘Ü’L-MESÂNÎ IN OTTOMAN POETRY AND ITS FRAME OF MEANING

Abstract

Ottoman poetry has a structure that allows it to be examined on multiple layers of meaning. This situation is possible through the used words having associations to various meanings. Thus, couplets can be written to purport multiple meanings, enabling poets to present the power of the art. In the study, the concept of seb‘ü’l-mesânî that is used in Ottoman poetry has been examined, and different meanings the concept gained in Turkish poetry have been evaluated. Primarily, it has been discussed the approaches on the dictation of the term and the reasons behind these. Then, the expression of seb‘ü’l-mesânî in Qur'an has been explained. It has been attempted to analyze the diversity in significance of the concept in Qur'an with the help of different tafsirs and meanings, and to determine the frame of meaning of the composing words. The use of seb‘ü’l-mesânî by the Prophet Muhammad has also been discussed. The number “7” and seb‘ü’l-mesânî have particular importance in Hurufism. Firstly, the use and the assigned meanings of the number “7” and seb‘ü’l-mesânî in Hurufism have been defined. The use of the concept has been examined in the poems written from 14th to 19th century. Similarities and differences have been tried to be exhibited by comparing the meanings attributed to the concept by Hurufi poets and the use of the concept by poets who weren't affiliated to Hurufism. It is attempted to determine the acquired meanings of seb‘ü’l-mesânî in the examples investigated.

Divan şiirinin, birçok anlam katmanıyla değerlendirilmesine olanak sağlayan bir yapısı vardır. Bu durum kullanılan kelimelerin farklı anlam çağrışımlarını barındırabilmesi sayesinde gerçekleşmektedir. Böylece beyitler birden çok anlama gelecek şekilde yazılabilmekte, şairler sanat gücünü ortaya koyma fırsatı yakalayabilmektedir. Bu makalede, divan şiirinde kullanılan seb‘ü’l-mesânî kavramı ele alınmış, kavramın Türk şiirinde kazandığı farklı anlamlar değerlendirilmiştir. Öncelikle ifadenin yazımıyla ilgili yaklaşımlar ve bunların sebepleri üzerinde durulmuştur. Ardından seb‘ü’l-mesânînin Kur’an’daki anlatımı açıklanmıştır. Kavramın Kur’an’daki anlam çeşitliliği, farklı tefsir ve meâllerden hareketle incelenmeye, terkibi oluşturan kelimelerin anlam çerçevesi tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Ayrıca seb‘ü’l-mesânînin Hz. Peygamber tarafından kullanımı da ele alınmıştır. Hurûfîlikte yedi sayısının ve seb‘ü’l-mesânînin ayrı bir önemi vardır. Öncelikle hurûfîlikte yedi sayısının ve seb‘ü’l-mesânînin kullanım şekli, kazandığı anlamlar ifade edilmiştir. On dördüncü yüzyıldan on dokuzuncu yüzyıla kadar yazılmış şiirlerde kavramın kullanımı incelenmiştir. Hurûfîlik inancına bağlı şairlerin kavrama yükledikleri anlamlar ile hurûfî olmayan şairlerin kullanımları mukayese edilerek benzer ve farklı yönler ortaya konulmaya çalışılmıştır. İncelenen örneklerde seb‘ü’l-mesânînin anlam katmanları tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır.
