Abstract
Independence medals were given from 15 May 1919 to 9 September 1922 to those who showed heroism in the Turkish National Struggle for Independence. This was accepted and legislated in the Turkish Grand National Assembly on 29 November 1920 and the medals were given to those regardless of any distinction whether they served in the military front or behind the front line. Therefore Independence medal is one of the most significant signs of the contribution to the National Struggle. During the period referred above, total 95.261 Independence medals were given to the right holders. When the South-West Government (Cenubigarbi) was established in the Three Cities (Elviye-i Selase) after the end of the First World War, Igdır was in the borders of this government. Igdır, where was under the military occupation until 1920, was annexed into the lands of Anatolia on 14 October 1920 after the “pro-east movement” led by Kazım Karabekir Pasha. From Igdır’s folk who undertook crucial duties both for the rescue of their vicinity and for the defense of the country 270 people took independence medals. Moreover these people not only served in the east and southeastern frontline but also they fought in the west front line where intense combats were experienced. For this reason, it is possible to argue that their contribution to the National Struggle was great. Igdır’s total centrum population was 3716 in the 1927 census. Women constituted the 1391 of this population and men’s number was 2325. In the villages, women constituted the 5330 of the population, while men’s number was 5606, which corresponded to 10.936 in total population. When the population of woman and children are put aside out of the total population and when 270 people, who had the Independence medals, are taken into consideration, it can be understood how much Igdır’s folk contributed to the National Struggle
I. Dünya Savaşı'nın sona ermesinden sonar Elviye-i Selâse'de Cenûb-ı Garbî Kafkas Hükümeti kurulduğu zaman, Iğdır bu hükümet sınırları içerisindeydi. Bu sayının 1391'i kadın, 2325'i ise erkektir.
