Abstract

The Valley of Wolves has been broadcasted on TOLO TV in Afghanistan and it attracted a considerable interest among Afghan people including kids and woman. This study aims to show the importance of the TV series as modern narrative forms in the collective emotion world of a society and, also the importance of using the structure and codes of primary orality products at that point. For these reasons, this study focuses on why Afghan people love The Valley of Wolves and its hero Polat Alemdar so passionately. In order to find answers to this question, we reached The Wolves of Valley audiences of 90 males and 39 females in Kabul center between July 1-15, 2017. Twelve open-ended questions including brief information about the viewers and their ideas about the scenario and heroes of the series have been asked to 129 people in total. In the study, “descriptive analysis” method was used as the qualitative analysis methods and the data were summarized and interpreted according to certain themes. Imperialist interventions, feuds, massacres and assassinations are prominent in the history of Afghanistan. The people of Afghanistan live in similar circumstances today. For this reason, the epic and sometimes outstanding struggle of Polat Alemdar and his friends has been an example and hope for the Afghan audience. Almost all of the viewers want to have a hero like Polat Alemdar for their own country. Few viewers stated that he is only a TV hero and that there is no such hero in real world. Most of male viewers say while they watch the series, they identify themselves with Polat Alemdar and, feeling a desire to help him. On the other hand, female viewers do not identify themselves with Polat Alemdar. However, it is understood that, the struggle of Polat Alemdar helped them feel happy and hopeful.
