Abstract
This study examines the media-power relationship that shapes disaster journalism in Turkey through a historical comparative lens. To this end, two major earthquakes -the 17 August 1999 Marmara earthquake and the 6 February 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes- are selected as case studies, and the way five newspapers framed the disaster agenda during the first week following each event is analyzed through comparative discourse analysis.Using comparative discourse analysis, it investigates how print media constructed dominant discourse through power relations, which aspects of the events were emphasized or obscured, how news language reflected the prevailing jargon of each period, and how newspapers’ ownership structures shaped their coverage. The theoretical framework adopts a critical perspective that understands the media as one of the key instruments in the production of consent for hegemonic discourse. In this context, the relationship between media and power is discussed through the lenses of capital and political economy. The study seeks to reveal how the ownership structures of newspapers and their relationships with political power are reflected in news framing. The findings are expected to contribute to a better understanding of how mainstream discourse is constructed within power relations. By analyzing news discourse on two major disasters from different historical periods, the study also offers a historical perspective on media representations in times of crisis. In this respect, the comparative framework provides not only an examination of the past but also a basis for understanding how crisis narratives and power relations are shaped in today’s media environment.
