Abstract

The place of death in modern society has long been discussed within the framework of denial and invisibility theses. With the process of modernization, death has been argued to have gradually withdrawn from everyday life and been transferred to professional settings such as hospitals and healthcare institutions, leading to the medicalization and institutionalization of the experience of death. However, recent studies in the sociology of death suggest that modern societies do not suppress death entirely; rather, they make it visible in new ways through media, popular culture, and digital communication technologies. This article aims to examine the transformation of death in modern society through the dimensions of medicalization, digital visibility, and discursive recontextualization. Adopting a qualitative research design, the study employs Norman Fairclough’s three-dimensional model of critical discourse analysis. Within this framework, eleven texts published between July 2025 and March 2026, addressing death in modern society from different perspectives, were analyzed at the levels of text, discursive practice, and social practice. The findings demonstrate that death is not merely a phenomenon that has been medicalized and removed from the public sphere, but is also continuously reconstructed through digital platforms, media discourses, and cultural narratives, acquiring new layers of meaning. The study argues that death in modern society should be understood as a multilayered social experience that is constantly reinterpreted through institutional arrangements, cultural narratives, and digital communication environments. Accordingly, the relationship between modern society and death is characterized by a paradoxical coexistence of invisibility and renewed visibility.
