THE LEISURE CULTURE IN ESKIŞEHIR ODUNPAZARI HOUSES

Abstract

The phenomenon of time has a very important place in human social life. Essentially, the social reality of time is the social reality of human existence. The leisure phenomenon that is the main subject of this study has a very significant place in the social reality of the time. Leisure times constituting an intensive dimension of social life is one of the crucial problems of today's leisure civilization and societies. Indeed, the leisure time in the societies of today is a field that not only individuals, the communities, non-governmental organizations, the business world, the big companies and the economic sectors focusing on the consumers in leisure times, but also governances, political groups and elites, and formal institutions quite give importance. In this study, the leisure culture in Odunpazari Houses (Odunpazarı Evleri) located in Eskişehir province where is one of Turkey’s metropolitan cities that recently attracts attention is handled in the sociological perspective. The subject is examined within the leisure places open to public in Odunpazari Houses situated in Odunpazari, one of the two central district of Eskişehir. The tea houses, cafes, coffeehouses, nargile houses (hubblybubbly or hookah houses), non-govermental organizes, mosques etc. were identified as the leisure time places striking in the Odunpazarı Houses. The purpose of this study is to understand how people evaluate and spend their leisure times in summers and winters, nights and daytimes, and the Ramadan month and the other months in the Odunpazari Houses. The topic of research was limited the temporally with the time elapsed from the beginning of 2013 until September of 2014 in a narrow sense and with the length of time elapsed from April of 2009 until October of 2014 in the broader sense, and with the human dynamism and liveliness of some places in Eskişehir’s Odunpazari Houses in terms of social universe. The work was conducted with participant observation and interview techniques. In addition, in his work the writer has resorted to the written sources on the subject and has benefited from them. As understood from this study inferred about the leisure culture of Eskişehir Odunpazarı Houses the places such as coffee houses, tea houses and gardens, fitness centers, sport places, libraries, museums, cinemas, theaters, shopping malls, mosques, nongovernmental organizations said in the article play a notable role in people's leisure time. Leisure understanding is indispensable for understanding conception of time, the mentality, the lifestyle, the culture codes, work culture, identity, etc. of society. Leisure culture provides important clues about society's approach to life, productivity situation, whether it is lazy or industrious, and the ability to produce solutions to problems. The same considerations apply also for the assessment of leisure in the leisure venues in Eskişehir Odunpazarı Houses in case of this research

Özet

Zaman, insanın toplumsal hayatında çok önemli bir yere sahiptir. Zamanın toplumsal gerçekliği, aslında insanın toplumsal gerçekliğidir. Bu çalışmanın ana konusu olan boş zaman olgusunun, zamanın toplumsal gerçekliği içinde çok mühim bir yeri vardır. Toplumsal hayatın ağırlıklı bir boyutunu oluşturan boş zamanlar, günümüzün boş zaman medeniyetinin ve boş zaman toplumlarının can alıcı problemlerindendir. Nitekim günümüzde boş zamanlar, sadece bireylerin, cemaatlerin, sivil toplum örgütlerinin, iş dünyasının, büyük şirketlerin, boş zaman tüketimine hitap eden ekonomik sektörlerin değil, aynı zamanda yönetimlerin, siyasal grup ve seçkinlerin, resmi kurum ve kuruluşların da oldukça önem verdikleri bir alandır. Bu çalışmada son zamanlarda gelişimiyle dikkatleri üzerine çeken Türkiye'nin büyükşehirlerinden biri Eskişehir ilimizde bulunan Odunpazarı Evlerinde boş zaman değerlendirme kültürü sosyolojik perspektifle ele alınmaktadır. Konu, Eskişehir'in iki merkez ilçesinden biri olan Odunpazarı'nda yer alan Odunpazarı Evleri'ndeki herkese açık boş zaman mekânları kapsamında incelenmektedir. Çayhaneler, kafeler, nargileciler, kıraathaneler, sivil toplum kuruluşları, camiler vs. Odunpazarı Evleri'nde dikkati çeken boş zaman mekânları olarak tespit edilmiştir. Çalışmanın amacı, Odunpazarı Evleri'nde yaz ve kışları, gece ve gündüzleri, Ramazan ayında ve diğer aylarda insanların boş zamanlarını nasıl değerlendirdiklerini anlamaktır. Çalışma katılımcı gözlem ve görüşme teknikleriyle yürütülmüştür. Ayrıca çalışmada konuyla ilgili yazılı kaynaklara da başvurulmuş ve onlardan yararlanılmıştır
