Abstract

The present study investigates the effect of the characteristics of the board on the timeliness of financial reporting by non-financial companies listed on Borsa Istanbul. The results from OLS regression analysis over 1037 observations obtained between 2018 and 2022 reveal that there is a negative association between the size and gender diversity of the board and the timeliness of financial reporting. This implies that a change in the number of board members and female members lowers the duration within which financial reports would be disclosed to the public. Further, the number of executive members on the board was positively associated with the timeliness of financial reporting; that is, an increase in the number of executive members lengthened the period for reporting. This is further supported by the results of the analysis of panel data, which include year*index interaction dummy variables. The theoretical contributions of this study add more to the literature in terms of an investigation into the effects of the board characteristics on financial reporting in emerging markets, including Turkey. In fact, little or no research of this nature has been conducted in emerging markets. Optimizing board structures practically enhances the accuracy and timeliness of financial reports to increase the market credibility.
