Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the level of interpretation of first grade students’ responses to Uyurgezer Fil, a picturebook written by Behiç Ak. Within the scope of the study, 39 first grade students from two public elementary schools were interviewed. The schools were located in economically disadvantaged areas of the city. The participants reviewed and responded to the pictures of the book. A researcher took interview notes. Next, participants’ levels of interpretation were determined via content analysis. The levels of interpretation were (1) description, (2) basic interpretation, (3) imaginative interpretation and (4) critical understanding. The analyses were carried out to understand the level of interpretation of each sentence shared by the participants. Overall 39 participants generated 465 sentences to interpret pictures. It was found out that most of the interpretations were at the description level. The numbers of sentences at this level were considerably more than the sum of the sentences in all other levels. The numbers of sentences at the critical understanding level were very limited. Also, one in every five sentences was coded under the imaginative interpretation level and there were fewer sentences coded under the basic interpretation level. There were some Çocuklar Resimli Çocuk Kitaplarındaki Resimleri Nasıl Yorumluyor?... 691 Turkish Studies International Periodical For the Languages, Literature and History of Turkish or Turkic Volume 10/4 Winter 2015 considerable differences between the findings of the present study and that of previous research. In this study, the participants’ interpretations of “Uyurgezer Fil”, the book, were generally short and only limited to a single page. The interpretations were generally was not associated with the rest of the book. Even though they commented on two consecutive page leaves, they mostly did not relate the pictures on the pages. Most of the participants did not refer back to the previous page while talking about the pictures on a page. They were mainly interested in the study and engaged in conversations with the researchers; yet, their interpretations of the pictures on each page were 3-4 sentences long on average. The researchers encouraged the participants to review and say more about the pictures; but, they did not say much and indicated that they said what they know. It was found out that the participants’ interpretations were at all four levels. Most of the sentences are at the description level. The number of sentences coded at the description level is more than the sum of the sentences at the other three levels. It should be noted that the number of sentences at the critical understanding level were very few and only shared by two participants. Also, one of every five sentences is at the imaginative interpretation level and the number of sentences at the basic interpretation level is little less than the ones at the imaginative interpretation level. The findings indicate that the participants might have focused on individual figures in a picture. While a group of participants imagined various stories based on the pictures they viewed, another group of them only made basic interpretations of the pictures. The frequency of sentences coded under the critical understanding level is below expectations. Although most of the participants (82% of all) have received early childhood education, a big chunk of the interpretations of the pictures were coded only at the description level. Children in this age groups can easily make critical interpretations (Davies, 1999); yet, only 1.7% of all sentences are at the critical understanding level. The study was conducted at the end of the spring semester and most of the students could read and write; so, it is expected that they had reached the critical understanding level. It should also be kept in mind that they should have received training on how to critically interpret the pictures. Now showing adequate critical understanding of the pictures indicate that children cannot go beyond what they see in the pictures and show high level reasoning when they interpret the pictures. It can be claimed that if their experiences with pictures in school allowed them to analyze the pictures in the books, go beyond what they see and make more indepth interpretations, we could reach different findings. The findings also show that the participants formed relatively simpler and shorter sentences than what they should be able to do at their age. The literature indicates that students at similar age groups can perform at higher levels of interpretation (Bromley, 2003). It has been shown that participants could talk beyond what is seen on the pictures, speculate about what is happening in pictures, make predictions based on the details and demonstrate high level reasoning skills (Bromley, 2003). For example, in Bromley’s study, a six-year-old 692 Kevser KOÇ – Sibel YILDIZ – Rana COŞKUN Turkish Studies International Periodical For the Languages, Literature and History of Turkish or Turkic Volume 10/4 Winter 2015 child interpreting Kitamura’s Lilly Takes a Walk (1997) found a figure in the water very similar to a dinosaur. Then he said, “How could there be a dinasor in the water and also, there wasn’t people when dinasors were alive. But there was a couple but I suppose they killed ‘em to eat the meat (p. 148).” It was also observed that while the participants were interpreting the people, objects, and context on a single page, they perceived them as separate entities rather than parts of a coherent picture. For example, a student, Emre, interpreting the second page leaf by explaining, “It snowed. The cats are laying on the snow. There is decoration. The helicopters throwing the decorations out.” What is interesting in these statements is that the child did not build a relation between snowing and throwing out the decorations for a coherent understanding of the picture composition. But, the fi

Yapılan birebir görüşmeler not alınmıştır. Çocuklar Resimli Çocuk Kitaplarındaki Resimleri Nasıl Yorumluyor?... 689 Turkish Studies International Periodical For the Languages, Literature and History of Turkish or Turkic Volume 10/4 Winter 2015 Verilerin incelenmesi sırasında dikkat çekici olan durumlardan bir diğeri de, öğrencilerin sayfalardaki nesneleri ve durumları yorumlarken bütün bu durumlara birbirinden bağımsız anlamlar vermeleridir.
