Abstract
The Divan-ı Şeyh Muhyiddin/Divan-ı Şeyh Mehmed Çelebi (880/1476), written by Şeyh Mehmed Çelebi who was a sheikh at the Zeyni dervish lodge in Eğirdir, is known as the Hızır-nâme (Book of Khidr) in scholarship. The work consists of eighty poems which narrate the travels of a warrior dervish figure in the heavenly realm and to various territories on Earth under the guidance or the spiritual blessing (himmet) of Khidr. Another important figure of Ottoman sufism, Hacı Bektaş, also plays a prominent role in some sections of the narrative, especially as he appoints the warrior dervish, who is the poetnarrator, the head of the Ottoman army. There are two prominent features in the Hızır-nâme. The first one is the ascension (miraj) journey of the dervish accompanied by Khidr, and the second one is the narration of this journey in an autobiographical style; that is, by a first-person narrator. Both features distinguish the Hızır-nâme from other Turkish works of its time. This short article will focus on the links between the intrinsic features of the Hızır-nâme and the region of Eğirdir, and will point out the historical, cultural and regional aspects of Eğirdir which apparently had an influence on the textual features of the Hızır-nâme. Eğirdir stayed as a border-zone between the Ottomans and the Karamanids for many years. Also, Eğirdir was in the vicinity of Konya, therefore in the vicinity of the Konevi Library, one of the most important education centres for dervishes at that time. Togetherness of these two regional conditions, which differ from and complement each other simultaneously, has shaped the content of the poems in the Hızır-nâme accordingly. The poems include both the traces of epics and mystical literature that have developed in Anatolia and the works of Ibn ‘Arabi and his followers. This togetherness can also be traced in the roles and portrayals of Khidr and Hacı Bektaş in the poems. Also, intriguingly, the poet uses two pennames throughout the text and at the end of each poem he mentions his penname. In some poems he mentions both of his pennames. These pennames, one of Arabic origin, Muhyiddin, and one of Turkish origin, Dolu, can be read as representing the abovementioned written sources and oral narratives, which co-existed in Eğirdir in the fifteenth century
