Abstract

This study focuses on the verbs of proximity (af‘āl al-muqārabah), one of the three fundamental elements of the verb system in the Arabic language which indicate that an action is close to occurring, and specifically examines "kāda" (كاد), the most common verb in this group. The investigation covers the preterite (māḍī) and imperfect (muḍāri‘) forms of the verb "kāda" in the Holy Qur’an, including both its affirmative and negative usage patterns. The primary objective of the study is to clarify the shifts in meaning that arise particularly when the verb "kāda" is used with a particle of negation, as well as the linguistic debates surrounding this topic. While there is a consensus that the action does not occur in affirmative usage, whether negative usage proves that the action actually took place is a matter of critical importance in terms of both exegesis (tafsīr) and linguistics. In this context, a correct analysis of the verb's usage within Qur’anic contexts is essential for interpreting the verses in accordance with their intended purpose. The study employs a comparative method to address the different approaches of linguists and commentators toward the verb "kāda." Specifically, the debate over whether negation applies to the act of "proximity" or to the "main verb" when a negative particle precedes "kāda" is examined through sample verses. As a result of this investigation, it has been observed that the diversity of the usage of "kāda" in the Holy Qur’an offers a rich world of meaning that reflects the eloquence (balāghah) and miraculous nature (i‘jāz) of the language. It is concluded that the debates regarding the use of the negative form of the verb are not merely grammatical preferences, but are decisive elements that directly shape theological and exegetical interpretations.
