Abstract

The collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the processes through which the state rose again and was reconstituted constitute one of the greatest historical trials experienced by us as a society. Hilmi Ziya Ülken’s book Aşk Ahlakı (1931) not only explains the causes of our social decline within the framework of morality, politics, and “magicians” (the ulema, intellectuals, and thinkers), but also presents a powerful framework for reconstructing society on solid moral foundations. Aşk Ahlakı is the first and only work that philosophically constructs both the reasons for social collapse and the means of achieving collective aims. According to Ülken, who argues that tribes and societies constituting humanity have successively lived through the ages of excitement-enthusiasm, imagination, will, and passion, the highest stage—corresponding to the age of passion—is the realization of a just society, the supreme level of morality. Tribes and societies are distributed across these stages according to their capacities, and only a few have reached the age of passion. In the 1920s, Turkey was experiencing the age of will and striving to reach the stage of passion. Drawing a parallel between the historical stages of humanity and the emotional states of the individual, Ülken maintains that a person becomes moral to the extent that they can grasp humanity and humankind by fully experiencing their emotional states—especially their passions—and thereby attaining the ethics of love. The moral goals that individuals must realize are listed as unity, self-sufficiency, tranquility, hierarchical stages, and justice. The hierarchical layers applicable to both the individual and society are identified as the people, the citizen, the patriot, and humanitarian patriotism. In his work, Ülken develops a new model of social order and succeeds in establishing politics and morality as philosophical problems.
