Abstract

The Ottoman Empire, which ruled across three continents, produced works of art in many fields. Influenced by their geographical setting, the Ottomans drew inspiration from nature and incorporated various decorative elements into both movable and immovable works of art. Among these works, coins hold a special place as they provide significant insights into the empire’s prestige, economic standing, social and political structure and societal conditions. This study will chronologically present the changes and developments from the emergence of the first coin to the Ottoman period. It will focus on the decorative program through the introduction of a group of gold and silver coins minted during the reign of Sultan Mahmud II (H. 1223–1255 / M. 1808–1839) and housed in the collection of the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations. In addition, the similarities and differences between the decorations found on coins and other works of art from the period will be compared. While decorative motifs from earlier periods continued to be used during this period, new elements were incorporated into the decorative repertoire due to the influence of Westernization. This clearly reflects the shift in the artistic sensibilities of the era. While calligraphic, floral, geometric and figurative ornamentation are present in this period, the examples we are examining do not feature figurative ornamentation.
