Abstract

This study examines the transformation of the concept of beauty throughout history, focusing on its socio-cultural, psychological, and bodily effects on individuals within the context of artistic practice. From antiquity to the present, the connections between beauty and morality, status, gender, and power relations are emphasized, demonstrating how beauty has become commodified in modern society and transformed into an increasingly unattainable ideal. The article argues that the perception of beauty is not merely an aesthetic preference but a social construction closely linked to processes of selection and social acceptance. This study is structured within a practice-based artistic research framework, as it aims to establish a bidirectional relationship between theoretical analysis and artistic practice, and to explore how the concept of beauty can be reconstructed through surface, body, and material. In the practical component of the research, process-oriented experiments aimed at reconstructing the concept of beauty were conducted using liquid latex as a material. This study is structured within the framework of practice-based artistic research. The layered application of latex onto surfaces, its drying process, the act of peeling, and subsequent painting stages are addressed as both physical and conceptual modes of production. The resulting deformations and ruptures generate an organic and primitive aesthetic language that challenges the notion of perfection traditionally associated with beauty. Within this framework, the works of artists such as Heidi Bucher, Sophronia Cook and Kim Ye, who employ latex in their practices, are examined to evaluate the material’s relationship with the body, space, and sexuality. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that beauty is not a universal or immutable phenomenon but is continuously reproduced through cultural codes, social expectations, and modes of production. Through experimental works created with liquid latex, the pressure and alienation imposed by beauty ideals on the individual are made visible.
