Abstract
This paper presents a word-for-word translation of a page from the Ischia Manuscript. It is the Gemini page from the Astrology section of the manuscript. In the Medieval period Gemini was represented by two lovers, instead of twins, so the page was used by the author to give guidance to the young women of Ischia on seduction and reproduction. The translation uses a strict and disciplined methodology, to be sure that the modern paraphrasing is correct and cross-references with the accompanying illustrations. The writing system of the manuscript is unusual in having informal phonetic spelling, so that silent letters and junctural letters are omitted as they were in speech. The language of the manuscript is primarily an early Romance language known as Galician-Portuguese, as Ischia was part of the Crown of Aragon in 1444, but there is also some Latin and Greek due to the cultural history of the monastery on Ischia Citadel, where the manuscript was written. The symbols for the manuscript alphabet are derived from ancient Phoenician and Arabic letters, also for historical reasons.
