MEDICINAL USES FOR A TOXIC PLANT IN THE MEDIEVAL MEDITERRANEAN

Abstract

This paper presents a complete palaeographic study of a page of handwritten script from a Medieval manuscript, known as MS 408. Analysis demonstrates that the language used for the manuscript is a unique hybrid of Iberian-Romance (Galician-Portuguese) with Greek & Latin. The manuscript then long time in the library of Castello Aragonese, Ischia, where it remained until 1912, when it was sold-off along with other documents when the castle fell into private ownership. Eventually the manuscript found its way to the Beinecke Library, Yale, where it remained incomprehensible until 2017, with its language and writing system subsequently explained and reintroduced to their respective academic fields in 2019. Since then, the procedure for reading and interpreting the scripts has been exacted and honed and refined with the benefit of practice and experience in combination with extensive further research. This paper demonstrates the palaeographic process used in transliterating the manuscript scripts into modern Italic alphabet and then translating into English wording. Modern paraphrasing is then used to convert the translated text into a familiar phrasing style. The semantics (meaning) and syntax (grammar) of the manuscript scripts now emerge with a high degree of accuracy.

Bu makale, MS 408 olarak bilinen bir Ortaçağ elyazmasından bir el yazısı sayfasının tam bir paleografik çalışmasını sunmaktadır. Analize göre el yazmasında kullanılan dil İber-Romans (Galiçyaca-Portekizce) ile Yunanca ve Latince'nin eşsiz bir karışımıdır. El yazması uzun süre Ischia'daki Castello Aragonese'nin kütüphanesinde okunmadan 1912'ye kadar muhafaza edildi. Kale özel mülkiyete geçtiğinde diğer belgelerle birlikte satıldı. Nihayetinde el yazması Yale'deki Beinecke Kütüphanesi'ne gönderildi ve 2017 yılına kadar burada saklandı. 2019 yılında ise dili ve yazı sistemi açıklandı ve ilgili akademi dünyasına yeniden sunuldu. O zamandan bu yana, yazıları okunması ve yorumlanması prosedürü kapsamında eser kapsamlı araştırmalar incelemeye alındı. Dolayısıyla bu makale, el yazmasının modern İtalik alfabesine ardından da İngilizceye çevrilmesinde kullanılan paleografik süreci göstermektedir. Daha sonra, çevrilen metni tanıdık bir ifade tarzına dönüştürmek için modern tefsir yöntemleri kullanılmıştır. El yazmasının metni semantiği (anlamı) ve sentaksı (dilbilgisi) doğrulanmıştır.
