Abstract
Ali Hikmet Tungay graduated from the Faculty of Science in Dârülfünûn in 1920, after which he was sent to Paris for further training. On his return to Turkey in 1924, Tungay worked first in Dârülfünûn and then in various secondary schools. Tungay's three questions and one answer were published in the journal L'Intermédiaire Des Mathématiciens in 1923 and 1925. Tungay was one of the first mathematicians to publish abroad in the early Republican period. Tungay's three questions in LIDM are questions from the theorems whose proofs he gave in Tez, prepared for his graduation from Dârülfünûn in 1920. In Tez, Tungay transformed Diophantine equations into familiar identities such as the difference of two squares and applied binomial expansion, and used this method to find general solutions of some special quadratic Diophantine equations of the second degree. Tungay stated in Tez that he had used "a more general and simpler method" and his work was appreciated by Mehmet Nâdir and the editors of LIDM. Tungay's only reply in LIDM was to generalise an erroneous answer in the same journal to algebraic identities. In this reply, Tungay presented an n-term generalisation of a special 3-term solution of algebraic identities using the "induction" proof technique. With this generalisation, Tungay indirectly shows and corrects the error in Buquet's solution. Tungay's works on both Diophantine equations and algebraic identities are original contributions to mathematics because of his generalisations and and theorem proofs. These original works of Tungay, published abroad, are in a remarkable and important position in terms of Ottoman and Republican mathematics history studies. In the present article, Tungay's domestic and foreign works on number theory have been evaluated comparatively from a mathematical point of view. Tungay's mathematical studies were clearly influenced by his teacher Mehmet Nadir. It can be assumed that Nadir aimed for a teacher-student continuity in number theory with Tungay, his student at Dârülfünûn. Information about Tungay's biography has been brought together and presented in the light of archive documents and family records.
