Huseyin Azmi Dede and His Booklet Titled “Saz u Teraneye Dair”

Abstract

Huseyin Azmi Dede, one of the nineteenth-century Ottoman Sufis, wrote books in different fields such as kalam, fiqh, sufism and history of religions. Born into a Mawlavi family, Azmi Dede became a sheikh at the age of nine and continued in this position for the rest of his life. This article deals with the booklet titled “Saz u Teraneye Dair” by Huseyin Azmi Dede. This booklet not recorded in biographical sources and academic studies on the author’s life and works, contains the author’s views on music and various plays. This article includes the evaluation of the author’s life and scientific personality and the analysis of the work. At the end of the article there is the transcribed text of the work and its original version. In the work “Saz u Teraneye Dair”, the author shared his comments on the provisions of Islam about music. Huseyin Azmi Dede builds his views on the permissibility of music on the lahw, a Qur’anic concept. The author states that people may have different views on music and instrument playing, and religious provisions on this issue should be evaluated according to the conditions of the period. With this content, the booklet can be added to the series of works dealing with music discussions in the Ottoman period.

Özet

XIX. yüzyıl Osmanlı mutasavvıflarından Hüseyin Azmî Dede; kelâm, fıkıh, tasavvuf ve dinler tarihi gibi farklı alanlarda eserler kaleme almış bir zâttır. Mevlevîliğe müntesip bir ailede dünyaya gelen Azmî Dede, dokuz yaşında başladığı meşihat vazifesini ömrünün son günlerine kadar yerine getirmiştir. Bu makalede Hüseyin Azmî Dede’nin Sâz u Terâneye Dâir adlı risâlesi ele alınmaktadır. Müellifin hayatına ve eserlerine değinen biyografi kaynaklarında ve akademik çalışmalarda kayda geçmeyen bu risâle, Hüseyin Azmî Dede’nin müzik ve çeşitli oyunlar hakkındaki görüşlerini ihtiva etmektedir. Bu araştırmada müellifin hayatına, ilmî ve edebî kişiliğine dair değerlendirmelerin akabinde eserle ilgili analizlere yer verilmiştir. Makalenin sonunda eserin transkripsiyonlu metni ve orijinal hâli bulunmaktadır. Sâz u Terâneye Dâir adlı risâlede mûsikînin İslam dini açısından hükmüne dair kanaatler paylaşılmıştır. Hüseyin Azmî Dede mûsikînin caiz oluşuna dair kanaatlerini “lehv” kavramı üzerine inşa eder. Mizaç farklılıkları, enstrüman çalmanın hükmü ve dinî hükümlerin dönem şartlarına göre yorumlanması mûsikî konusunda değindiği hususlardandır. Bu içeriğiyle risâle, Osmanlı dönemindeki mûsikî tartışmalarını ele alan eserler dizisine eklenebilir.
