Abstract

Astonished by the level reached by science and mathematics in the modern period, Kant heavily criticized Rationalism and Empiricism as models of explanation of the nature of knowledge and sought a third way. In his Critique project, in which he promised to bring about a Copernican revolution in philosophy, Kant proposed the adoption of the understanding that “objects conform to the human mind” in the emergence of knowledge, instead of the common understanding that “people conform to objects”. Kant, who wanted to preserve the objectivity of knowledge, produced an original idea by claiming that there is a type of knowledge that is both synthesized by the human mind and that is necessary and universal. The most outstanding examples of this type of knowledge, which he conceptualized as synthetic a priori, can be found in mathematics. In the Critique of Pure Reason, Kant made it clear that all the propositions of mathematics are synthetic a priori. The aim of this article is to clarify how Kant grounds the claim that “all judgments or propositions of geometry are synthetic a priori” and to discuss the situation of geometric propositions such as “triangle has three sides”, which are obviously analytic a priori, in the context of Kant’s views. While Kant acknowledged that some judgments/propositions of geometry are analytic, he claimed that they do not make sense on their own; but can only be part of a synthetic construction process. Kant, who did not explain further, left the problem in question ambiguous. In addition, Kant, who positioned the concepts of analytic and synthetic in opposition to each other at the beginning of CPR, considered analytical judgments as a part of synthetic judgments in solving the aforementioned problem.

Saf Aklın Eleştirisi’nde Kant matematiğin tüm önermelerinin sentetik a priori olduğunu açıkça ortaya koymuştur.
