Abstract
One of the first initiatives of the American Protestant missionaries who came to Ottoman territory at the beginning of the nineteenth century was to set up a missionary printing house. The subject of this study is the Malta missionary printing house, which was set up by American Protestant missionaries seeking a gateway into Ottoman territory. The printing house was initially run by Protestant missionaries with little idea about how to operate a press, and it failed to live up to expectations. For this reason, the missionaries eventually hired a professional printer and multilingual assistants. As time passed, the changing nature of missionary work and strategy led the printing house to become active in new fields, and the press, which had been established for printing only religious texts, began to publish secular documents as well, primarily schoolbooks. Faced with political problems in the region, tensions with the Catholic Church, and negative attitudes on the part of regional publics and governments, Protestant missionaries began to turn their attention to different communities and expanded their printing work into different languages. In its eleven years on the island of Malta, before it moved to Izmir (Smyrna) in December 1833, the press published millions of pages in all the languages spoken in the Ottoman Empire and the Mediterranean region.
