Abstract

This study uses the stages of coming to terms with the past, as laid out by Yehudith Auerbach and Murat Paker (specifically the stages of “equivalence,” “respect,” “sympathy,” and “understanding”), to evaluate the published memoires of witnesses of the miliary coup of 12 September 1980. Three main political movements dominated the period: the Kurdish movement, the leftist movement, and the nationalist movement. Because of the multiple organizations involved in and the fragmentary nature of the Kurdish and leftist movements, this study has made a special effort to include memoires written by members of different organizations. On the basis of these accounts, this study argues that “coming to terms with the past” and “reckoning with the past” are two distinct processes that do not refer to the same phenomenon.
