DEVELOPING COMPREHENSION LEVELS AND READING MOTIVATION OF THE 8TH GRADE STUDENTS BY READING ENGAGEMENT MODEL

OKUMAYA ADANMIŞLIK MODELİ İLE SEKİZİNCİ SINIF ÖĞRENCİLERİNİN OKUDUĞUNU ANLAMA DÜZEYLERİ VE OKUMA MOTİVASYONLARININ GELİŞTİRİLMESİ

Abstract

In this study, it was examined how the comprehension levels and eading motivation of the eighth grade students, could be improved by Reading Engagement Model. The study was conducted through action research among the qualitative research methods. In order to choose the study group, criterion sampling, one of the purpose ful sampling methods, was used. The research was carried out in the 8/A Turkish Lesson in Tevfik Memnune Gültekin secondary school which belongs to Ministry of National Education, in the district of Battalgazi in the province of Malatya. There were 35 students in class. The data of the study were collected through semi-structured interview form and student diaries. Semistructured interviews were applied with students and parents of students in the end of study. In the analysis of qualitative data, Content analysis method was used. The data obtained have been discussed in line with the related literature. According to the study results, it was found out that the Reading Engagement Model applied to the students were effective in developing reading comprehension levels and reading motivation of the students. There are several suggestions in parallel with the results that gained from the study. In the scope of in-service training, Turkish language teachers in the middle schools could be trained about using the Reading Engagement Model efficiently. Training of Turkish language teachers in the middle schools on using the Reading Engagement Model efficiently would be useful in the scope of in-service training. The activities in the Turkish textbooks, prepared in accord with Turkish curriculum could be re-arranged by taking Reading Engagement Model into account. Educating Turkish teacher candidates at the universities about efficient usage of Reading Engagement Model would be beneficial. In the present study, the Reading Engagement Model was applied to on the eighth grade students in "action research form. But, the Reading Engagement Model could be also applied to other grades and in different forms

Bu araştırmada sekizinci sınıf öğrencilerinin okuduğunu anlama düzeyleri ve okuma motivasyonlarının Okumaya Adanmışlık Modeli ile nasıl geliştirilebileceği üzerinde durulmuştur. Araştırma nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden eylem araştırması ile desenlenmiştir. Çalışma grubunun oluşturulması için amaçlı örnekleme yöntemlerinden ölçüt örnekleme yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Çalışma, MEB'e bağlı Malatya ili Battalgazi ilçesi Tevfik Memnune Gültekin Ortaokulu 8/A sınıfında Türkçe dersinde yapılmıştır. Bu sınıfta 35 öğrenci vardır. Araştırma verileri yarıyapılandırılmış görüşme formu ve öğrenci günlükleriyle toplanmıştır. Araştırma sonunda öğrenci ve velilerle yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler yapılmıştır. yararlanılmıştır. Araştırma sonuçlarına göre öğrencilere uygulanan Okumaya Adanmışlık Modelinin öğrencilerin okuduğunu anlama düzeyleri ve okuma motivasyonlarının gelişmesinde etkili olduğu bulunmuştur. Araştırmadan elde edilen sonuçlara dayalı olarak çeşitli önerilerde bulunulmuştur. Okuduğunu anlama ve okuma motivasyonunun geliştirilmesinde etkili bulunan Okumaya Adanmışlık Modeli 8. sınıf Türkçe derslerinin işlenmesinde öğretmenler tarafından kullanılabilir. Ortaokullarda çalışan Türkçe öğretmenlerine hizmet içi kapsamında, Okumaya Adanmışlık Modelini etkili bir biçimde nasıl kullanabilecekleri konusunda eğitim verilmesi yararlı olabilir. Türkçe öğretim programına uygun olarak hazırlanacak olan Türkçe ders kitaplarındaki etkinlikler Okumaya Adanmışlık Modeli dikkate alınarak düzenlenebilir. Bu araştırmada Okumaya Adanmışlık Modeli 8. sınıflara uygulanmıştır. Araştırma farklı sınıf düzeyindeki öğrencilerle gerçekleştirilebilir. Bu araştırmada Okumaya Adanmışlık Modeli eylem araştırması deseninde uygulanmıştır. Bu model farklı araştırma desenlerinde uygulanabilir
