Abstract

In ancient cities located in Western Anatolia amphora, which is known that has been produced since BC 7th Century, is a form that has been used in order to carry and store goods such as liquids like water, olive oil, wine or dry substances such as grain. In this work, 9 pieces of amphora were analyzed acquired in 2021 digging season which take part on the west of Hadrian Temple, Kyzikos city located on the province of Balıkesir, Erdek district. Kyzikos is one of the cities where there are countless architectural and plastic works discovered which has thousand of years of cultural accumulation. However information about city’s ceramic is limited. That’s why it is important to analyze every ceramic and bring it on the literature. Examples of amphoras acquired in Kyzikos that we know they are an important component in wine and olive oil trade, were analyzed with analogy and its form features were given in detail. It is determined that analyzed amphoras belong to six different types of Late Roman Era. These are; Spatheion Amphora, Late Roman Amphora 1 ( LRA 1 ), Late Roman Amphora 8 ( LRA 8 ), Samos Cistern Type, Late Roman Amphora 2 ( LRA 2 ) and Keay 62. Types that are common in a wide geography like Aegean Islands, Western Anatolia, Mediterranean, are Mediterranean originated. Imported amphoras that are formed low in numbers but varied types and widespread in many areas give us clues about trading net. It is understood that amphoras which are formed in six different types dated between AD 5th Century and AD 7th century were used for carriage or storage purposes. With this article which is known as a rework for Kyzikos amphora founding, it is presented first impressions about how a typology could amphoras form and their usage.
