Abstract

The aim of research is to reveal misconceptions of teachers of mathematics have by looking into their knowledge concerned with the concepts of height and kurtosis center included in geometry. Revealing misconceptions of teachers who are responsible for gaining attaintments included in middle school lessons of geometry to students is important. Thus, students’ possibility of having of misconception can be removed. Case study from qualitative research models and content anaysis from the approaches of qualitative data analysis were used. The sample of study consists of 30 middle school teachers of mathematics working in Istanbul and Kars. A diagnostic test regarding geometry consisting of 2 open ended questions was used for gathering data. Elemantary teachers of mathematics were wanted to draw kurtosis center of obtuse angled triangle and heights of a right triangle. By analyzing the answers of teachers, the misconceptions teachers had were categorized and percentage and frequency values were given. The misconceptions teachers had were exemplified by the answers teachers gave to the questions. Also, the teachers having difficulty in answering questions stated their ideas. Consequently, we arrived at a conclusion that teachers had some misconceptions such as “Wrong configuration of how an obtuse triangle can be drawn”, “Application of height drawing in acute triangle to obtuse triangle”, “Wrong configuration of how height in triangle can be drawn”, “Wrong configuration of which height belongs to which base”, “Confusing the terms of barycentre of triangle and height center”, “Not thinking that leg of triangles means to height”, “Not realizing that a height can be drawn from right angled edge”, “The association of euclidean formula with heigt”

Öğretmenlerin, "Geniş açılı üçgenin nasıl çizildiğinin yanlış yapılandırılması, "Dar açılı üçgende yükseklik çiziminin geniş açılı üçgene uygulanması", "Üçgende yüksekliğin nasıl çizildiğinin yanlış yapılandırılması", "Hangi yüksekliğin hangi tabana ait olduğunun yanlış yapılandırılması", "Üçgenin ağırlık merkezi ile yükseklik merkezi kavramlarının ayırt edilememesi", "Dik kenarların yüksekliği ifade edebileceğinin düşünülmemesi", "Dik açılı köşeden yükseklik çizilebileceğinin fark edilmemesi", "Öklid bağıntısını yükseklikle ilişkilendirmek" şeklindeki kavram yanılgılarına düştükleri sonucuna ulaşılmıştır
