Abstract

The purpose of the present study is to adapt the Alexithymia Questionnaire for Children (Rieffe, Oosterveld & Terwogt, 2006) into the Turkish language and culture and perform the adapted scale’s validity and reliability analyses. The sample of the study was determined by convenience sampling technique and was composed of a total of 500 students, 242 female (% 48.6) and 258 (% 51.4) male sixth and seventh graders in a central Anatolian city. As a result of translation and backtranslation process and in the light of experts’ opinions, it was determined that the translated items showed high similarities with the original ones and the language validity was high. As part of the validity study, a confirmatory factor analysis was conducted and the result of Chi-square test was found to be statistically non-significant (p = .88). Also, confirmatory factor analysis showed that the three-factor structure fit with the original structure (x² /sd=2.44; GFI = .95; RMSEA= .04). The analyses demonstrated that all of the item loadings were above .40. The analysis of the predictive validity showed a positive and significant correlation between the Alexithymia Questionnaire for Children and the Brief Symptom Inventory and the Mood Scales. Cronbach Alpha internal-consistency coefficient was found to be .78. In conclusion, the Turkish version of the Alexithymia Questionnaire for Children can be regarded as a valid and reliable scale in measuring the alexithymic characteristics of children in Turkey
