Abstract

The political ruptures caused by the Westernization movement extending from Tanzimat to the Republican Era are reflected in novels through the genre of tragedy. In early period novels, love stories carry the social issues about modernization. The love stories, which emphasize the genre of tragedy, become one of the tools that bring Turkish literature to a realistic level. The love stories created the motif of star-crossed lovers as stories that end in separation and death instead of the lovers’ reunion. In keeping with the nature of tragedy, this motif is associated with destiny and truth. This motif has changed the direction of love stories towards social issues. The motif has gained functionality in revealing social issues in the Turkish novel. In this study, the function of the motif of star-crossed lovers will be examined through the novels Taaşşuk-ı Talât ve Fitnat, Aşk-ı Memnu, and Huzur, which are the prominent love-centered novels of their periods continuing from Tanzimat. The study aims to reveal the contribution of the motif of star-crossed lovers to the modernization process of Turkish literature through discussions on these novels.
