Abstract

Rabbit, which is used mostly as an experimental animal in many countries and stands out with its rapid growth and rapid reproduction characteristics, has created a separate industry for meat and wool in China. In recent years, rabbit breeding activities have gained intensity all over the world due to its ease of maintenance, production in small areas, being a livestock branch where workforce of all ages can be evaluated, and being very suitable for family business. When it comes to wool production from rabbits, the most valuable species is the Angora rabbit. Angora rabbit is an endemic species native to Ankara province of Turkey. The wool obtained from this type stands out especially with its heat protection and softness. However, Angora rabbit breeding and wool production are more demanding than other rabbit species. Although some attempts have been made to reproduce this animal, which requires careful care, in recent years, it is unfortunately extinct in Turkey. This article aims to investigate the place and importance of Angora rabbit breeding and wool in Chinese history, and to reveal the importance given to livestock and wool production activities by the Chinese press and media organs. For this purpose, Angora rabbit news and columns published in old Chinese newspapers and magazines with the aim of encouraging and raising public awareness were examined. In the study, the commercial value of the Angora rabbit in the history of China was examined by using the China Academic Journals (CNKI) database and the information obtained from open sources and the books written in this field. While this species, which is native to Ankara, is now known as extinct, it has been concluded that China takes the first place in the world in Angora rabbit fattening and Angora wool production. The fact that these articles appeared in newspapers and magazines even after 1937, when China was occupied by Japan, is another important detail that shows the importance given to this rabbit species. In addition, the fact that the newspapers and magazines examined in the study are mostly 1936-1937 shows that the Angora rabbit was introduced to China and started to be produced much earlier than 1950, contrary to what is stated in English sources. In the light of all this information, it is obvious that China has a special and long-term interest in this sector.
