Abstract

Introduction: Decision making, one of the most emphasized main components among nursing practices, is defined as the process by which assessments are made so that healthcare professionals choose the best for patients with the best available evidence. Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the decision-making status of nursing students. Methods: The descriptive study was conducted between December 2022 and January 2023 in the health sciences faculties of two state universities. Ethics committee approval was obtained before the study. A total of 162 students who took the course of surgical diseases nursing, completed the course in surgical clinics and volunteered to participate in the research were included in the study. The data of the study were collected using the Student Identification Form and the Nurse Decision Making Scale. Results: It was determined that the average age of the students participating in the study was 20.32±1.17, 79.0% of them were women, 76.5% of them lived in dormitories and 84% of them had a nuclear family. In the study, it was determined that the introductory features (age, gender, willingness to choose the nursing department and the place where the students live) did not affect the decision-making status of the students (p>0.05). In the study, it was determined that the scale total score averages of the students were 89.0±13.5. Conclusion: It was determined that nursing students mostly behaved intuitively in clinical decision making. In order to develop the decision-making skills of nursing students in clinical practice, it is recommended to support clinical decision-making processes in theoretical education, models that can be applied in decision-making, and the importance of clinical decision-making.
