Abstract

In Yūnus Emre's works, there are advice and methodological approaches regarding the path necessary for man to return to his origin. In this context, apart from his best-known work Divan (his collected poetry), Risalat al-Nushiyya (Treatise of Advice) stands out. In this work, Yūnus Emre draws attention to the struggle between the soul and the nafs in the struggle for the throne, which he allegorically narrates with the theme of war. The first concepts that confront each other in the war, which is described in stages, are avarice and kanāat (contentment). Considered as a door opening to asceticism in Sūfi understanding, kanāat also takes place in Yūnus’s work as the first destination of the journey in which man will return to his origin and experience his transform. In the work, Yūnus portrays war scenes with his couplets. He describes the war with details such as the equipment, structures, goals, and strategies of the soldiers and guides the reader on this journey of transformation with his recommendations. In this study, we will try to analyze the metaphors that Yūnus uses for the concepts of greed and kanāat, which is the first stage of the struggle in his allegorical story, with the hermeneutic method. In this analysis, we aim to gradually include how the concepts used by Yūnus are used in the Qur'an, the sunnah and the Sūfi tradition to which he belongs, and their semantic context. Our study will also address whether the advice given by Yūnus has a universal relevance for today's human beings.
