Abstract

Significant changes have occurred in the climate structure due to the rapid increase in the population regarding industrial activities, urbanization facilities and uncontrolled usage of natural resources. The negative impacts of these changes vary by region and they are manifested themselves in the form of increasing temperatures, rising seawater levels, irregular precipitation regimes and the observation of extreme weather events. An expected and widespread consequence of these climatical and meteorological changes is the urban heat island effect. The urban heat island effect is caused not only by climatic and meteorological changes, but also by a decrease in the quality of life of citizens residing in cities and, in particular, disadvantaged groups in society. So, this issue has a priority as a public health threat. Based on this point, the study aimed to establish a cause–effect relationship between the urban heat island effect and anthropogenic elements that cause climate change and increase possible disaster risks in urban areas. In this context, the relevant academic literature has been examined in detail and the applications have been evaluated which are developed to minimize and eliminate the urban heat island effect at the national and international levels. As a result, strategies compatible with global climate change are discussed within the scope of urban planning discipline and what adaptation and adaptation policies can be developed in order to increase urban resilience.
