Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic, considered to be the biggest pandemic of the twenty-first century, has affected the entire world in various ways. Meanwhile, many researchers have begun to conduct a variety of studies on this major phenomenon. Due to the risk perception created by the pandemic, changing consumer behavior has been one of the topics of this research. Tourism professional candidates, who will have important roles in the production as well as consumption of tourism services, need to possess skills such as taking responsibility and producing solutions in unforeseen complex situations in the sector. Therefore, it is important to understand how they perceive problems and develop solutions. In other words, it is crucial to comprehend how the participants, who are studying at the undergraduate level as future tourism professionals, experience the pandemic process and how their travel behaviors are shaped In this context, the aim of the current research is to comprehend how safety behaviors are shaped during the travels of future tourism professionals. To achieve the purpose of the study, data were collected through online interviews with 44 students studying tourism between June 2021 and 2022. As a result of the analyses, sensory, behavioral, and emotional experiences emerged within the theme of pandemic experience in daily life, and vacation destination, transportation modes, vacation preferences, hygiene behaviors, and safety-seeking categories emerged under the theme of risk perception behaviors during travel. The results have significant implications for both practitioners and future researchers.
