Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the expectations of biology teachers and students for a more efficient biology instruction. In order to reach this goal, a questionnaire was prepared to understand the opinion of biology teachers and students regarding the biology education program, school directors, pre-service training and in-service training, textbooks and class hours. The questionnaire was applied to 20 biology teachers and 314 students from 14 high schools in the center of Erzurum. SPSS 13.0 Statistical Program was used to analyze the data. The findings indicated that it was important to be updated curriculum of biology education and to be rearranged class hours. The findings also indicated that density of biology program and limited time restricted to execute different instruction methods for teachers. Besides, it was found out that most teachers need in-service training regarding internet, computer and foreign language despite the fact that they consider their education which they experienced during in-service training was partially sufficient. As a result, it was suggested that biology instruction program should be reviewed in terms of content concerning the expectations and attitudes of biology teachers and students, and needs of biology teachers should be fulfilled by school directors
