Abstract

Acute cerebrovascular disease or stroke is a socio-economic health problem that has significant effects on the patient and family, and has an important place in hospital admissions and health expenses. Swallowing disorder (dysphagia), which is a common problem after stroke, is associated with a decrease in mouth, pharynx and esophagus functions, leads to serious problems resulting in airway obstruction, aspiration, aspiration pneumonia, dehydration, malnutrition, sepsis and death, affecting quality of life, delaying rehabilitation and it may cause a significant increase in health expenditures. Evaluation of swallowing function at patient admission, continuation of the assessment with focused diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation of individualized care including early precautions will prevent/minimize the development of the problem. Continuing the care of the patient who develops swallowing disorder after stroke, guided by a nursing model/theory, in line with the nursing process, which is a scientific problem solving method, will enable the determination of existing problems and risk situations, and the planning and implementation of appropriate, correct and realistic solutions. The information presented in this review is intended to guide nurses in the holistic and individualized care in acute stroke patients with dysphagia.
